چکیده

We explore the formation and evolution of the black hole X-ray binary system M33 X-7. In particular, we examine whether accounting for systematic errors in the stellar parameters inherent to single star models, as well as the uncertainty in the distance to M33, can explain the discrepancy between the observed and expected luminosity of the ∼ 70M⊙ companion star. Our analysis assumes no prior interactions between the companion star and the black hole progenitor. We use four different stellar evolution codes, modified to include a variety of current stellar wind prescriptions. For the models satisfying the observational constraints on the donor star’s effective temperature and luminosity,we recalculate the black hole mass, the orbital separation, and the mean X-ray luminosity. Our best model, satisfying simultaneously all observational constraints except the observationally inferred companion mass, consists of a ∼ 13M⊙ black hole and a ∼ 54M⊙ companion star. We conclude that a star with the observed mass and luminosity can not be explained via single star evolution models, and that a prior interaction between the companion star and the black hole progenitor should be taken into account.

Precise Measurement of the Spin Parameter of the Stellar - Mass Black Hole M 33 X - 7

In prior work, Chandra and Gemini-North observations of the eclipsing X-ray binary M33 X-7 have yielded measurements of the mass of its black hole primary and the system’s orbital inclination angle of unprecedented accuracy. Likewise, the distance to the binary is known to a few percent. In an analysis based on these precise results, fifteen Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray spectra, and our fully r...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

An Xmm-newton Observation of 4u1755-33 in Quiescence: Evidence for a Fossil X-ray Jet

We report an XMM-Newton observation of the Low mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) and black hole candidate 4U1755-33. This source had been a bright persistent source for at least 25 yrs, but in 1995 entered an extended quiescent phase. 4U1755-33 was not detected with an upper limit to the 2–10 keV luminosity of 5 × 10d 4kpc ergs s (where d4kpc is the distance in units of 4 kpc) – consistent with the lumi...

Discovery of a 3.6-hr Eclipsing Luminous X-ray Binary in the Galaxy Ngc 4214

We report the discovery of an eclipsing X-ray binary with a 3.62-hr period within 24 of the center of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4214. The orbital period places interesting constraints on the nature of the binary, and allows for a few very different interpretations. The most likely possibility is that the source lies within NGC 4214 and has an X-ray luminosity, Lx, of up to 7 × 10 ergs s. I...

We review our current understanding of the radio properties of black hole X-ray binaries in connection with the X-ray spectral states, and discuss them in the framework of the recently proposed unified model for the jet-accretion coupling in these systems.
